Trees are bigger than many buildings, and even when there are a lot of people visiting you can still feel at peace.
The falls were our first stop in Portland. Yes,we landed, picked up the rental car and drove for a little rest and relaxation.
The falls are located on the Oregon side of the Columbia river, along the Columbia River Highway, about 30 minutes from Portland airport.
The drive is already a treat, the mountain and river views with the blue sky were just breathtaking.
The parking lot to go to the falls is located in the middle of the highway. On the other side of the highway at the base of the falls is the Multnomah falls lodge. The lodge houses a restaurant, a coffee shop, a gift shop, restrooms, and an interpretative center.
When you visit the falls you want to make sure you eat at the lodge restaurant. The restaurant has a bright terrace all made of glass. It is like you are eating in the middle of the forest and you can actually see some of the waterfall from your seat while enjoying your meal.
The prices are pretty reasonable and the view is priceless.
The Multnomah falls is Oregon's number one visited natural attraction with a couple of million visitors per year.
Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Oregon. The falls drop in two major steps, split into an upper falls of 542 ft (165m) and a lower falls of 69 ft (21m). There is a 2 mile hiking trail to go to the top of the fall. There is heavy traffic in the fall due to all the tourists that visit them but is completely worth it. We started our hike around 9:30 am and had a relatively free hike, but a lot of people were coming up when we were going down.
There are multiple stops along the hike offering views of the mountains and the Columbia River. The first stop you want to make is at the Benson bridge, from here you will be able to see the falls and take great pictures, it is nice to stop there and feel the breeze.
Although it is not a very long hike it is very steep. Along the hike you will find pikas running around sneaking from the hikers. Pikas are small mammals they look like combination, of rabbit and squirrel.
Once you reach the top you will find a balcony on the last view point where you will see the the lodge at the very bottom and you can follow the water falling down. Pretty impressive. This a great place to take some pictures and rest before you start going down
If you visit Portland this is a must stop that you have to make.
